ALL RESOURCES FOR EDITORS

Roles and Responsibilities, Peer Review Process, Benefits and Rewards

EDITORIAL BOARD OVERVIEW

Editorial Boards of Qualiten Journals are comprised of group of scientists and physicians who have extensive experience in their field of research or medical work. Editorial Board members (also called editors or handling editors) guide authors and journals to ensure high-quality and impactful scientific studies are published after a thorough peer review. Thus, editors are gatekeepers and preserver of quality and integrity of scholarly content. Their task is pivotal in filtering and improving science for the benefit of society.

Quality of the journal depends on the quality of its Editorial Board. Thus, Qualiten ensures that only qualified individuals with minimum ten years of active research or medical practice are selected as members of the Editorial Board. Members of our Editorial Boards are affiliated with reputed institutions, and they have extensive knowledge in their respective fields of work.

1. Kind of Editors

Editors can be of different types depending on their roles and expertise. Different kinds of editors are:

  • Section Heads: Section Heads are Editorial Board members who are responsible for a specific section (field) in which they have extensive experience.
  • Editorial Board Members: Editorial Board has a group of individuals who are subject matter experts in the fields falling under the scope of the Journal. These editors are also referred as “manuscript handling editors” as they are directly involved in the peer review process associated with the manuscripts.
  • Guest Editors: Guest Editors are either Editorial Board members or other researchers who handle the thematic collections (special issues) in Qualiten Journals.

2. Selection & Qualification of Editors

Qualiten Press selects well-qualified editors for our journals as quality of Journal is mirrored by quality of editors. Editorial Board membership is primarily invitation based or through a referral from another Editorial Board member. The invitation and selection are based on an overall review of professional experience, including research experience, publication record, match of expertise with the scope of journal, manuscript review experience, mentorship record (trained PhDs/MDs/Postdocs), international acclaim, and overall contribution to the field.

3. Qualiten Editorial Board Composition

Qualiten Journal’s Editorial Board is constructed keeping in mind the diversity as well as depth of scientific research in that Journal’s field. Currently, we are seeking editors conducting research and/or practice in areas such as basic science, translational science, medical devices, drug development, medicine, healthcare, statistics, regulatory affairs, medical law, and ethics. If you are interested in participating in the Editorial Board of Qualiten Journals, you may check “Editorial Board Invite” for more information.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF EDITORS

1. Guiding Journal – Editorial Policies & Code of Conduct

As a custodian of scholarly communications, handling editor’s responsibility is to objectively evaluate the novelty, soundness of the research method, correctness of conclusions, ethical compliance, and impact of manuscript under review. Editor should guide the Journal and author to ensure all editorial policies and code of conduct are being followed in manuscript and during peer review process. Any deviation from ethical practices and codes should be informed to the Qualiten Press as soon as the editor becomes aware of it.

2. Decision Making – Peer Review Outcome

The handling editor’s role is crucial in maintaining the integrity of science that is published in scholarly journals. After receiving the manuscript and other peer-reviewers’ comments, handling editor evaluates the manuscript and peer-reviewers’ comments to provide constructive feedback to authors and makes an independent decision on acceptance, rejection or resubmission of article. Editor also evaluates author’s comments and revisions to make final decision on acceptance or rejection of article.

3. Decision Making – Ethical Misconduct

Editors evaluate the cases of complex ethical misconduct and disputes (research integrity, data fabrication, data falsification, etc.) and provide their decisions to help Journal maintain the quality and ethical standards in publishing.

4. Editorial Writing

Editorial pieces are short forms of content written by senior staff or editors of the Journal. Editorials mostly contain the opinion of the editor, but it reflects the viewpoint of the journal for respective research study. Editorials guide scientists for their future research strategies or provide a summarized overview of scientific studies and their prospects.

5. Develop, Handle & Release Thematic Collections

Thematic collections are also called special collections, which are sets of scholarly articles published keeping very specific scientific subareas in mind. Unlike regular articles which can be reviewed by different editors, all articles submitted for thematic collections are generally handled by only a few handling editors (guest editors for that thematic collection). Our editorial board members are expected to develop strategies for the thematic collection and work along with Journal staff to ensure efficient review and publication.

6. Journal Representation & Promotion

6.1. Attracting Submission & Readership

Editors should work alongside publishers to attract submission and readership. Editors can make different strategies to ensure that the reach of the article is improved and more scientists publish in their journal to get benefits of high-quality peer review system and editorial guidance.

6.2. Evaluating Performance

Editors should evaluate the performance of the journal through different measures like citation of articles, downloads, views, comments, etc. Editors can devise strategies based on their evaluation about how to maximize the reach of the published articles to the audience and minimize any drawbacks to improve the overall performance of the journal.

7. Leading & Mentoring – Qualiten Press Community

Editorial Board members are leaders and mentors for Qualiten Press, and we rely on our editors to provide necessary guidance and take Qualiten Journals forward. Qualiten collaborates with various groups and organizations to form a close-knit community of people working towards the same goal of improving scientific communication. Editor should take responsibility for leading the whole community and providing them mentorship and guidance on their role through their expertise.

ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF EDITORS

Editors are gatekeepers and preservers of quality and integrity of scholarly contents. Editors should ensure that the journal and all members involved in the publishing process follow ethical guidelines. Editors can visit our Ethics for Editors section to check complete guidelines about ethical practices which should be considered while handling the articles. Our guidelines are developed based on the standards recommended by international bodies such as Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), World Medical Association (WMA), Office of Research Integrity – US Department of Health & Human Services (ORI – US DHHS), UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO), Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS – UNESCO – WHO) and others.

MANUSCRIPT HANDLING & PEER REVIEW PROCESS

1. Criteria of Publication in Qualiten Journals

Qualiten Journals publish peer-reviewed scholarly articles in the field of science, technology and medicine. All submitted articles that have passed initial quality check undergo full peer review by subject matter experts (handling editors and reviewers) from science and medical communities. During peer review, articles are critically evaluated for scope, novelty, impact, ethics, reproducibility, content organization, and language.

We publish original research articles, reviews, clinical studies, perspective, case reports, clinical images, editorial and commentary. You may find more details and scope of journals on individual journal pages, for example, Scope of Qualiten Allergy, Scope of Qualiten Animal Sciences, etc. Qualiten Journals also monitor articles post-publication and any misconduct is handled appropriately in interest of the public and scientific community.

2. Editorial & Peer Review Process Summary

Qualiten Press performs multilevel and multistage quality control before any article gets published. Qualiten Press performs plagiarism check, scientific merit check, ethical compliance and other checks before initiating a formal double-blinded peer review. During peer review stage, articles are thoroughly evaluated by external reviewers and handling editor from the journal’s editorial board. Only articles which are accepted by handling editors and section heads will be published. You may find detailed information about our peer review process at: Qualiten Journals – Peer Review Process.

3. Editors Role in Peer Review Process

The journal’s editorial board members play pivotal role in the peer review process. After receiving the manuscript and other peer-reviewers’ comments, handling editor (a member of the journal’s editorial board) evaluates the manuscript and peer-reviewers’ comments to provide constructive feedback to authors and to make independent decision on acceptance, rejection or resubmission of articles.

3.1. Acceptance/Rejection of Manuscript Handling Invitation

Qualiten Press invites editorial board members to handle the manuscripts undergoing peer review process. Handling a manuscript for entire publishing process is an important responsibility and editors are advised to accept or decline the “manuscript handling invitation” depending upon their availability at the time of invitation.

Qualiten Press staff is always available to assist editors and coordinate the peer review process, so that editors’ time is utilized efficiently and primarily in evaluating science and making publication decisions on manuscripts from their areas of expertise.

3.2. Editor’s Code of Conduct for Peer Review
3.2.1. Confidentiality & Anonymity

All articles undergo double-blinded peer review; thus, editors are requested to maintain anonymity in all their comments and decision letters. Also, submitted manuscript is confidential and the manuscript content must not be communicated with anyone else and for any purpose other than the peer review.

3.2.2. Conflicts of Interest

Before accepting to handle any manuscript, handling editors should ensure that they do not have any conflicts of interest (financial or otherwise) related to the manuscript. Some examples of conflicts of interest are:

  • Author’s work is competing with handling editor’s work.
  • Authors of manuscript are related to handling editor. Although, peer review process is double-blinded, and Qualiten Press tries to not invite co-authors or editors belonging to same institution as of authors, there may be some instances when handling editor can recognize authors based on the content of manuscript.

Evaluating a manuscript that has conflict of interest can lead to bias in the evaluation, which is harmful to the integrity of scholarly communication. If handling editor perceives any competing or conflicting interest, then it must be communicated to the journal immediately.

3.2.3. Unbiased Review & Decision

In the first stage of peer review, handling editor provides comments for authors along with interim decision (major changes, minor changes, acceptance, rejection) based on an initial evaluation of article and independent peer-reviewers’ comments. The final publication decision (acceptance or rejection) is made by handling editor after overall evaluation of author’s response, revised manuscript and reviewers’ comments. Handling editor’s evaluation and final publication decision should be unbiased and solely dependent on the quality of scholarly content.

3.2.4. Specific & Constructive Feedback

Qualiten Press uses double-blinded peer review process, where handling editors’ evaluation and comments are communicated to authors by Qualiten Press journal staff. Thus, it is crucial that comments provided by handling editors are very specific and to the point, such that authors can understand it clearly and respond in provided time frame. Qualiten Press assists handling editors by providing a well-designed Peer-Review Form, which has defined article review questionnaire based on article sections. Also, peer-review manuscript is prepared with line numbers and page numbers for easy referencing to any part of the manuscript.

3.2.5. Positive Language & Tone

Everyone involved in the peer review process (authors, editors, reviewers, and journal staff) are expected to treat the other individual (even if the process is double-blinded) with respect and dignity. Handling editor is expected to provide honest comments and feedback on the scholarly content of the article without the use of derogatory or insulting language or tone. Please understand that authors who have created the content, may have limitations or drawbacks, such as English not being the primary language and limitation of research funds. Peer review is an opportunity to provide honest and constructive feedback on science as well as to understand the limitations of authors from their response to the editor’s comments.

3.2.6. Timeliness

An efficient peer review process requires coordinated efforts from handling editor, reviewers, authors and journal staff. The handling editor’s timeliness in evaluating manuscript, peer-reviewers’ comments, authors’ response, and revised manuscript is crucial in maintaining the progress of the peer review process. Thus, timely response from handling editor not only supports the review process but also facilitates timely publication of accepted articles. In case of rejected articles, a timely decision saves time and resources for authors that can be utilized by them to revise and improve study for future publication and public benefit.

3.3. Independent Analysis of Reviewers Comments

Editors should independently analyze the reviewers’ comments and ensure reviewers are following code of conduct and ethical guidelines. In case of multiple peer-reviewers, reviewers can have differences in opinions about the manuscripts. Editors should analyze the feedback from all of the reviewers and ensure to include all the shortcomings and positive feedback for the manuscript while preparing their own feedback and decision for the author.

3.4. Interim Decision & Report on Manuscript

Manuscript handling editor (member of Editorial Board) independently analyzes the article and compares the collected feedback from all peer-reviewers, to formulate an interim feedback decision on the article. The compiled feedback from all reviewers including interim decision of handling editor is communicated to the author by Journal’s editorial office.

3.5. Evaluating Author Revisions

Qualiten Press sends reviewers’ feedback to the author and after author reverts with revised manuscript, it is forwarded to the handling editor. Handling editor evaluates author’s revision and ensures that satisfactory revision and reasoning is provided by author.

3.6. Final Decision & Report on Manuscript (Acceptance/Rejection)

Based on the evaluation of reviewers’ feedback and author’s revision, editor must make a final decision on whether the manuscript requires any further changes, or whether it is ready to publish. Editor can also reject the manuscript if author’s revisions are unsatisfactory or editor can send it for another round of peer review in case of major changes. Report with the final decision is submitted to Qualiten Press and our internal team proceeds working on the manuscript as per editor’s suggestion.

ARTICLE TRACKING SYSTEM

Qualiten Press is developing Article Tracking System for editors to check the status of manuscripts they are handling. Our tracking system will have efficient process flow and will be consistently updated according to the progress. A manuscript identifier will be provided to the editor after initial acceptance for peer review process which they can use to track the progress of the article.

PEER REVIEW RESULTS SUMMARY PUBLICATION

Qualiten Journals follow double-blinded peer review to ensure unbiased and anonymous review. However, transparency of the peer review is equally important. Therefore, Qualiten publishes a “Peer Review Results Summary” along with the article to showcase the feedback and limitations in the manuscript highlighted by handling editor and peer-reviewers. Peer review summary is a compiled document that shows major comments and feedback provided by all reviewers and it does not specify the name of specific peer-reviewers along with comments.
