Volunteer Peer Review of Manuscript and Benefits

REVIEWER OVERVIEW

Qualiten Press appoints peer-reviewers who are experts in their respective subjects. Peer-reviewers guide authors in their scientific research to enhance the quality of the article. Reviewers are selected based on their subject matter expertise and efficiency. We only appoint individuals with active publication records or previous research activity. Our peer-reviewers are affiliated with top institutions across the globe and they have extensive knowledge in their respective subject.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF REVIEWERS

1. Review & Feedback to Editor & Author

Major role of a reviewer is to provide unbiased review and feedback via our questionnaire and review form to the author and editor. Reviewers should evaluate all the aspects of the articles thoroughly and provide feedback with efficiency. We expect reviewers to follow the code of conduct and best reviewing practices to perform exemplary service to science.

2. Gatekeepers – Ethical Misconduct

Reviewers are gatekeepers of ethical misconduct by the researchers. Thus, reviewers must keep a keen eye on the data available in the study and should ask for necessary supplementary data from authors if required. Data irreproducibility has become a major concern in the scientific community, and reviewers can minimize this flaw in the research by performing impeccable evaluation.

3. Guiding & Mentoring – Qualiten Press Community

Peer-reviewers are mentors for Qualiten Press and we rely on our reviewers to provide necessary guidance to authors and Qualiten Press to enhance the quality of research articles. Qualiten collaborates with various groups and organizations to form a close-knit community of people working towards the same goal of improving scientific communication.

ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF REVIEWERS

Reviewers should ensure all ethical guidelines are being followed by the author, journal and reviewer themselves while reviewing the article. We suggest reviewers to visit our Ethics for Reviewers section to get complete guidelines about ethical practices which should be considered while performing peer review. Our guidelines are based on standards recommended by international bodies such as Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), World Medical Association (WMA), Office of Research Integrity – US Department of Health & Human Services (ORI – US DHHS), UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO), Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS – UNESCO – WHO) and others.

REVIEWING MANUSCRIPT DURING PEER REVIEW

1. Criteria of Publication in Qualiten Journals

Qualiten Journals publish peer-reviewed scholarly articles in the field of science, technology and medicine. All submitted articles that have passed initial quality check undergo full peer review by subject matter experts (handling editors and reviewers) from science and medical communities. During peer review, articles are critically evaluated for scope, novelty, impact, ethics, soundness and reproducibility, content organization, and language.

We publish original research articles, reviews, clinical studies, perspective, case reports, clinical images, editorial and commentary. You may find more details and scope of journals on individual journal pages, for example, Scope of Qualiten Allergy, Scope of Qualiten Animal Sciences, etc. Qualiten Journals also monitor articles post-publication and any misconduct is handled appropriately in interest of benefit of public and society.

2. Peer Review Process Summary

Qualiten Press performs multilevel and multistage quality control before publishing any article. Qualiten Press staff performs initial checks like plagiarism check, scientific merit check, ethical compliance and other checks before initiating a formal double-blinded peer review. During peer review stage, articles are thoroughly and independently evaluated by external reviewers and handling editor from journal editorial board. Only articles which are accepted by handling editors and section heads will be published. You may find detailed information about our peer review process at: Qualiten Journal Peer Review Process.

3. Reviewer’s Role in Peer Review Process

After receiving the manuscript from Qualiten internal team, reviewers perform independent review of the manuscript simultaneously with other peer-reviewers and editor. Reviewers fill the review form of questionnaires based on sections while following all the guidelines of the review process and submit the report to the editor. Reviewers should refrain from using negative language and must provide constructive feedback while following ethical guidelines with the goal of improving research article.

3.1. Acceptation/Rejection of Manuscript Review Invitation

Qualiten Press invites reviewers to handle manuscripts and provide appropriate constructive comments for the manuscripts. Reviewers are advised to inform Qualiten Press about their decision to accept or reject the invitation by E-mail. Reviewing a manuscript is an important responsibility and reviewers should accept the invitation only if they have enough time to provide quality feedback within timeline.

3.2. Reviewer’s Code of Conduct for Peer Review

3.2.1. Confidentiality & Anonymity

All articles undergo double-blinded peer review; thus, reviewers are requested to maintain anonymity in all their comments. Also, submitted manuscript is confidential and hence results etc. must not be communicated with anyone else and for any purpose other than peer review.

3.2.2. Conflicts of Interest

Before accepting to handle any manuscript, reviewers should ensure that they do not have any conflict of interest (financial or otherwise) related to the manuscript. Some examples of conflict of interest are:

  • Author’s work is competing with reviewer’s work.
  • Authors of manuscript are related to reviewer. Although, peer review process is double-blinded, and Qualiten Press tries to not invite co-authors or reviewers belonging to same institution as of authors, there may be some instances when a reviewer can recognize authors based on the content of manuscript.

Evaluating a manuscript that has conflict of interest can lead to bias in the evaluation, which is harmful to the integrity of scholarly communication. If reviewer perceives any competing or conflicting interest, then it must be communicated to the Journal immediately.

3.2.3. Unbiased Review & Decision

In peer review process, reviewer provides comments for authors along with their decision (major changes, minor changes, acceptance, rejection) based on an initial evaluation of articles and independent peer-reviewers’ comments. The final publication decision of acceptance or rejection is made by handling editor after overall evaluation of authors response, revised manuscript and reviewers’ comments. Reviewers’ evaluation and final publication decision should be unbiased and solely dependent on quality of scholarly content.

3.2.4. Specific & Constructive Feedback

Qualiten Press uses double-blinded peer review process, where reviewers’ evaluation and comments are communicated to handling editors and authors by Qualiten Press journal staff. Thus, it is crucial that comments provided by reviewers are very specific and to the point, such that authors and handling editors can understand it clearly and respond in provided time frame. Qualiten Press assists reviewers by providing a well-designed Peer-Review Form, which has defined article review questionnaire based on article sections. Also, peer-review manuscript is prepared with line numbers and page numbers for easy reference to any part of manuscript.

3.2.5. Positive Language & Tone

Qualiten Press expects everyone involved in peer review process (authors, editors, reviewers, and journal staff) to treat the other individual (even if process is double-blinded) with respect and dignity. Reviewer is expected to provide honest comments and constructive feedback on the scholarly content of the article without the use of derogatory or insulting language or tone. Please understand that authors who have created the content may have limitations or drawbacks, such as English being secondary language and limitation of resources. Peer review is an opportunity to provide honest feedback on science as well as to understand the limitations of authors from their response to feedback.

3.2.6. Timeliness

An efficient peer review process requires coordinated efforts from handling editor, reviewers, authors and journal staff. The handling editor’s timeliness in evaluating manuscript, peer-reviewers’ comments, authors’ response, and revised manuscript is crucial in maintaining the progress of the peer review process. Thus, timely response from reviewers not only supports the review process but also facilitates timely publication of accepted articles. In case of rejected manuscripts, timely decision saves time and resources for authors that can be utilized by them to revise and improve in future submissions.

3.3. Independent Review of Manuscript

Reviewers should provide independent and unbiased review irrespective of comments from the editors and other peer-reviewers. We follow double-blinded peer review and our process runs parallel with other reviewers and editors, thus there are fewer chances of manipulation. Still, it is possible that reviewers identify author(s) or editor. In such cases, reviewers should refrain from contacting other associated individuals and provide independent review irrespective of the role of author or editor.

3.4. Review & Report Submission

Reviewers must submit the reports to the editor by filling review form and completing questionnaire based on the article. In case of any author misconduct, reviewer should report it immediately to the Qualiten Press so we can contact the author for clarification.

3.5. Evaluating Author Revisions

Initially author revisions are evaluated by editors, and if they find it necessary, then author’s revised manuscript is forwarded to the reviewers. Reviewers must evaluate the revised manuscript with the same crucial viewpoint as the initial manuscript and note whether author’s revisions are satisfactory. Author may have included counterarguments to the points raised by reviewer’s and reviewer should note counterarguments and try to look at the points from the author’s perspective.

ARTICLE TRACKING SYSTEM

Qualiten Press has devised an Article Tracking System for reviewers to know the status of manuscripts they are handling. Our tracking system is efficient and consistently updated according to the progress. A manuscript identifier is provided to the reviewer after initial acceptance for peer review process which they can use to track the progress of the article.

PEER REVIEW RESULTS SUMMARY PUBLICATION

Qualiten Journals follow double-blinded peer review to ensure unbiased and anonymous review. However, transparency of the peer review is equally important. Therefore, Qualiten publishes a peer-reviewed summary along with the article to inform readers about article feedback and limitations. Peer-reviewers are also given recognition for their hard work by publishing their name along with the article. Review summary is not associated with any specific researcher, and it contains feedback by a group of peer-reviewers and editorial board members.
